Magic is a skill that can be mastered. It`s also something that can be explained. Yet, for me, magic - whether sleight of hand or elaborate process - has an aura about it; it`s something that has real power.

When I think of dialogue, I think of the same things.

Dialogue is real (not a sleight of hand type thing) and extraordinarily powerful. And even though relatively few are masterful at dialogue, it`s a skill - like magic - that can be learned.

I realize the magic metaphor isn`t perfect, there are no "tricks" to dialogue, but the potential power is real, and when it`s achieved in any group, magic definitely occurs.

As a leader your role requires that you become a skilled communicator. When most people think about communication skills they typically include presenting in meetings or groups, providing feedback, discussing topics of importance, listening intently and even emailing skills.

Yet this short list of important communication skills leaves out an important one - dialogue.

Dialogue comes from the Greek "dia", meaning through, and "logos", meaning words or meaning. Dialogue, then could be translated as a flow of meaning. William Issacs, in his excellent book Dialogue and the Art of Thinking Together , takes this one step further:

"In the most ancient meaning of the word, logos meant `to gather together,` and suggested an intimate awareness of the relationships among things in the natural world. In that sense, logos might best be rendered in English as ‘relationship.`"

Dialogue then is more than just "really good conversation" or even what happens when I "really focus on listening." Rather, dialogue is a meeting of minds in the spirit of relationship and the creation of synergy. It`s the open exchange of ideas in the context of relationship.

When you begin to think about dialogue in this way, you get a glimpse of the power that can be gained. While there are tools you can use to create this situation, like the magician`s secrets, you must start from this understanding that dialogue is the opportunity to think together.

To help create this magic, think of the times when "thinking together" would be exceptionally important for anyone, but especially leaders:

When developing trust When creating understanding related to a change When exploring problems and solutions When coming to complex decisions

And that`s a very short list.

The first thing you'll need to do is to calibrate somebody. Calibration is a term that simply means to pay attention to somebody's body language or facial expressions when they are saying something that you know is either true or false, or if they are thinking of specific person. Basically it means asking them a question, and then matching up their answers with their facial expressions and body language. The Police use this when they interrogate people.

For example, have them say something that you know is not true, and watch where they look when they answer you. Pay attention to where they look when they lie. Next ask a question that you are pretty sure will elicit a truthful answer, and watch their eyes. Chances are they will go to two different places, one when they tell the truth, and one when they tell a lie. As a general rule, people will look up and to the right when telling the truth, and up and to the left when lying. But be sure to calibrate them, as not all people are the same.

Now that you've got them "calibrated," you can begin asking them questions, and tell them you can read their mind and know if they are telling the truth or lying. Even if you miss a couple, you'll be much higher than fifty percent, which will astound most people. Many people use this within a relationship, but I'll leave that up to you to decide.

Another trick is to get them to think of two different people. It's much easier if one of the person they think of is somebody that don't like very much, and the other is somebody they do like quite a bit. Just by watching their facial expressions, you'll know precisely what's on their mind. Then just ask them simple questions, like "Who is taller?" or "Who did you meet first?" or other simple ones. Then you can easily tell who they are thinking of based on their facial expressions.

This trick works best with people that you are already friends with, as when we first meet people, we tend to keep our unconscious facial expressions somewhat guarded, so people can be a little hard to read at first. This is a fantastic party trick to use with your friends, and it will quickly make you the most popular person at any party.

Four magicians and mentors of Adrian Ramos, 19, were asked by the teens family to conduct the ceremony during a rosary and memorial service Wednesday. In front of about 200 people, magician Michael Van Horn snapped a wand in two and presented it to Ramos father and first magic mentor, Jorge Ramos. (Picture by Leonard Ortiz, Orange Co. Register).

Ramos, known as “El Magnifico,” was shot and killed during a robbery attempt April 28 while walking home after dark from a music class at Fullerton College in Anaheim. When Ramos was 9, he was the youngest performer to be featured at The Magic Castle. He also performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. But more often, he performed for small groups of friends and at hospitals.

This Tuesday, the Kirkland Washington woman who accused David Copperfield of raping her during a trip to his private island dropped her federal lawsuit.

The plaintiff dropped her suit just days after a federal judge ruled Copperfield’s attorneys could depose her under oath, and three months after local prosecutors charged her with prostitution and filing a false police report.

Bellevue prosecutors say the plaintiff asked a man to “pay $2,000 for sex in a hotel, and then falsely accused the man of trying to rape her because he refused the deal.”

Angelo Calfo, David Copperfield’s counsel with the Seattle firm Yarmuth, Wilsdon and Calfo, told reporters ‘[the Plaintiff's] lawsuit was nothing but a pathetic attempt to extort Mr Copperfield for money with malicious and false allegations. “There was no settlement. Mr Copperfield would not and did not pay Carroll a dime to drop her lawsuit.”
